Food Mythbusters

Let's taco 'bout treating Dads

Let us do the cooking this Father's Day (Sunday, June 19th) by pre-ordering lunch or dinner from Chaia - hot from the oven and ready-to-serve. Treat the family to tacos or a tray of enchiladas, a side of our herby green rice, and finish off your meal with our freshly-baked cinnamon-coconut cookies.

“Healthy” Food mythbusters

This time of year, people can become especially conscious of the latest “healthy” food trends. But, while certain meal regimens come with really great health benefits, other times they are nothing more than food fads. We wanted to debunk a few so you can make smarter choices when you’re fueling up for all the fun that summer has to offer.

MYTH 1: The gluten-free diet is healthy for everyone.

TRUTH: Gluten is not bad for your body unless you have a gluten-intolerance or allergy, or you have celiac disease. Chaia's food menu happens to be 100% gluten-free, but it’s a function of wanting to meet our customers’ dietary needs – and our corn chips and tortillas don’t call for wheat flour – not because we believe going gluten-free is necessarily healthier. True to form, we have beer on our drinks menu. After all, tacos & beer (not GF) are the Lucy & Ricky of food combos.

MYTH 2: All fats are fattening!

TRUTH: Not only has research shown that fat is no more fattening than protein or carbohydrates, but fats are in fact an essential nutrient that your body needs to survive. Lots of vitamins including A, D, E, and K are all fat-soluble, which means your body needs fat to use these nutrients! There are many healthy fats including seeds (try our Habanero Pepita Dip, nom nom) and extra virgin olive oil (EVOO) - which is the only oil we use at Chaia.

MYTH 3: Eggs have cholesterol. Cholesterol is bad. Don't eat eggs!

TRUTH: Seriously?! Eggs are not bad for you, and neither is cholesterol. At least not every type of cholesterol. Every cell in your body requires cholesterol in order to function properly. Pick foods with good cholesterol like beans and eggs and you're on the right track. The eggs we use in our scrambled egg & black bean tacos, delicious for a late breakfast or any time of day, are pasture-raised, so the chickens have a pretty nice quality of life, too.
