New Year 2023

January 03, 2023

Let’s Taco ‘Bout 2023:

Make It Simple

The simplest way to eat less meat is to eat more plants, in their whole form and deliciously prepared.

You may have run into the term “reducetarianism” in 2022. The food world’s latest buzzword describes a diet centered on eating less meat, fish, eggs, and dairy, without eliminating animal products altogether. For us, it’s also an effective mindset for making sustainable, and therefore meaningful, changes - however “small” they may seem - in the New Year or any time.

You may be asking what the difference is between a reducetarian and a flexitarian (another buzzy term).

Flexitarians eat primarily plant-based meals, only occasionally including meat, eggs or dairy; reducetarians lower their consumption of animal products while increasing their plant intake. Reducetarians may also pay special attention to quality and sourcing, selecting animal products from ethical and sustainable suppliers.

Reducetarianism isn’t a new approach, but it is a newer way of describing a more practical and achievable way of making more thoughtful choices. Its recent prevalence in food writing and conversations reflects how supply and demand are changing - people are becoming more plant-curious and environmentally aware, and chefs, cookbook authors, and restaurants are providing more delicious, plant-based options.

As we all look at opportunities for self-improvement in the year ahead, let’s take note from the reducetarians and take advantage of new and more abundant options. We don’t need to deprive ourselves to make meaningful changes - small, more thoughtful, and simple choices can make a real difference!
